Acne Scars

Acne Scars Treatment

Acne scars can develop in all type of acne. In essence any type of acne is prone to develop scarring sooner or later. Even though it is recommended not to pick your pimples, leaving them unattended to will not serve you either. That is the main reason why you should seek professional help, especially if you have an advanced case of acne. SIAN offers expert advice and many treatment options which will help you to remove or reduce unpleasant blemishes.

Basically, acne scars can develop regardless of the type of acne you have. However, more severe acne blemishes like pustules, nodules and cysts are more likely to generate scarring.

How does scaring occur?
When your pores are blocked and engorged with excess oil, dead skin cells and bacteria, they swell and the follicle wall breaks down. Infected matter spills into surrounding tissue, creating deep lesions which lead to scarring. Our body naturally tries to repair these damaged areas, however, formation of new collagen fibers are not as smooth and flawless as the original ones.

Types of acne scars:

  • Ice pick scars – small, deep holes in the surface of your skin
  • Rolling scars – appear from scar tissue bands which form under the skin thus creating an uneven skin surface on the outer layer
  • Boxcar scars – depressions in the skin
  • Keloid and Hypertrophic scars – protruding and thickened areas of the skin, resulting from excess collagen production during the body’s healing process

Prior to any treatment, SIAN's team of professionals will assess your skin condition and create a treatment plan that is best suited for you. Recommendations on best treatment methods or combinations of them will be given.

Treatments for acne scars

Acne Scars

Fractional CO2 Skin Resurfacing Laser or Venus Viva Laser
Fractional CO2 and / or Venus Viva Laser skin resurfacing are two aggressive and effective acne scar treatment options. By removing layers of skin in a fractionalized way, production of new skin cells are stimulated thus leading to the impressive elimination of scarring. The treatment can heal ice pick, rolling and boxcar scars. Tremendous improvements are clearly apparent after just 3 to 4 sessions where up to a 70% reduction of scarring is realized.

Microdermabrasion
This eliminates and significantly reduces the appearance of light acne scarring. The treatment helps to exfoliate the skin and clears up pores that have been clogged with oil and dirt. This is not appropriate for ice pick scars, on the other hand rolling scars respond effectively to this treatment. Microdermabrasion is a very sensitive technique! However, it may be used in conjunction with other methods to receive optimum results.

Skin Peeling System (Chemical peels)
One of the Skin Peeling treatment options could be an effective and permanent solution for your scarring, if the appropriate treatment method is selected. Chemical peels come in the various acid concentration levels and depending on your particular skin situation, the right concentration level should be applied.

Depressions and other serious acne scarring would require higher acid concentration peels in order to be effective. They exfoliate the surface layer of the skin thus stimulating fresh skin cell production and skin renewal. This results in a smooth, even and scar free facial surface, in addition collagen production is stimulated due to the removal of dead cells from the surface of the skin. Applying less concentrated peels are a good method for treating the pigment, texture and tone of the skin, but not sufficient enough for removing scars.

Normally several treatment sessions will be needed for more permanent results and to notice an improvement in your skin condition. Our doctors will assist you with the creation of a treatment schedule according to your particular skin type and issues.

Collagen-Induction Therapy
This treatment uses a roller devise containing clusters of needles to create puncture wounds on the skin that break up collagen strands and stimulate elastin fiber production. This also triggers collagen production and depressions level out. Some results will appear after a few months and will continue to develop over an approximate 9 month time frame. This is also called micro-needling or derma-rolling and SIAN was the first clinic to introduce this concept in 2009.

Micro - Injections
This method is used to eliminate hypertrophic scars by injecting cortisone directly into the blemish. This substance softens and breaks down scar tissue in the area being treated.

Acne Scar Surgery
This type of surgery is mainly performed to improve the appearance of hypertrophic scars. It is considered minor surgery and is relatively easy and quick to perform. It usually works well in conjunction with other treatment methods to attain the most successful and satisfying results. For instance, after the scar removal process, corticosteroid injection can be made in order to insure the reoccurrence of the blemishes. No single therapy will be 100% effective in reducing acne scars. The complexity and severity of scarring varies from case to case, at SIAN we will document and assess your progress to attain the best and most satisfying outcome.
